Strike a Match

I made my way through the tight crowd to where the man stood, his black hair swept into his eyes by the light breeze. I couldn't hide a grin when I saw Jack emerge beside me.

Jack was my cousin, a son of Nico di Angelo and Katerina di Angelo, demigods of Hades and Aphrodite. Though my Auntie Kat had gone missing years ago, during the war, and Jack had moved in with my family, living with us ever since. He was more of a brother than a cousin to me; the brother I never had.

Well, I had Myles, but he had always been more of a father to me than an older brother. I guess he felt he had to step up when dad... well...

Jack looked at me from underneath his mop of black hair, giving me a small smile that was his equivalent of a grin. I stood beside him while we waited for the last volunteer.

"Do you know where the others are?" I asked.

He nodded towards the gates. "Inside."

I nodded my understanding grimly, chewing on the inside of my cheek until I drew blood, a nasty habit I had developed whenever I worried too much. And I always worried too much.

When the last volunteer finally made his way to the front, I fought the urge to turn away and quit the quest, settling instead for a simple scowl. Allen.

"We shouldn't waste any time introducing ourselves." The older man said, leading us away from the rioting crowd. "Let's get this show on the road."

He lead us on the path towards the Cadelcott Tunnel and away from the camp, pressing forwards in a determined silence.

"Are they safe?" I asked Jack as we walked.

He shrugged. "I honestly don't know for sure. Sorry, Dove. They were fine when I last saw them but that was pretty soon after you left. A lot can change in an hour."

I snorted. "You've got that right."

Jack nodded his head towards Allen and the other strange man. "Do you know them?"

"The younger one is Allen; Isaac's son." I said grimly. Jack shot me a questioning look and I nodded. He was the son of the man who had killed my dad; Leo Valdez.

Jack studied Allen curiously, he wasn't much to look at, head slouched as he kicked at some stones on the path.

"Don't trust him." Jack said finally. "No matter what, you can't trust him."

I rolled my eyes. "Like I didn't already know that. Do you know the other guy?"

Jack shook his head. "I've honestly never seen him before today. You?"

I shook my head. "Neither." I trotted up the path so I was walking in step with the man. "I have two questions." I told him. "What's your name and where are we going?"

"I'm Damien." He grunted. "And as for the destination, well, maybe it's better if you don't know that."

@The Bright One
Who? Sorry, I haven't been keeping up with the Maury Povich show that this site has turned into as of late. (For you, the New Zealander, the Maury Povich Show is a dramatic relationship-ruining talk show where deadbeat dads have to face the fact that they have to pay child support. Look it up, the stuff's hilarious.)
