Rachel Dare: Adventures at Clarion Ladies Academy

Oops I Did It Again

I was just unzipping my second doodle-filled suitcase when a short, blonde girl entered my dorm.
"Hallo? Is this Miss Dare's room?" She had a little German accent, sweet. I smile and say "Yeah, I'm Rachel. You're Wendy?" "Yas. but I prefer to be called Dee." "Like Battlestar Galactica?" I do not know what zat is, but I suppose so." "Have you been to this school before?" She wheels in a few bags to her side of the room. "Yas. One year." "Coolio."

We work in silence for awhile, unpacking and organizing our stuff. I'm at the end of my bed, shoving random clothes into whatever drawers will fit them. Dee is hanging up posters, when I notice that one of them is 'King of Sparta,' but the words are German. "Hey! I love that movie!" "Er, zis one?" She points at King of Sparta. "Yeah!" Suddenly I start to feel myself fade out. Not faint, it's like my consciousness is replaced with another. Fortunately it doesn't take over, I can't see anything, but I can hear what I'm saying. "In months to come there will be three, Grace, Valdez and McLean. Soon two halves will become whole, sending sleep to a waking soul."

I snap back into my body, like literally. I double over and start coughing out the rest of the green mist. "Ah! Was soll der unsinn?" Through my coughing I sputter "What?" "What was that?" Her face is pale as a ghost. "Ah, sorry." What to say... what do I say?!? "That was a line in a play I was in last year. For some reason I wanted to act it out again." "Oh. What was the name of the play?" Uhm... "'Swords on the Hoover Dam.'" "Oh." "Yeah." Awkward silence ensues.

Soon enough we hear a bell sound through the speakers in the hall. "Would all first-year students please come to the auditorium for Orientation? It will begin in 10 minutes." It repeats itself again, does a little jingle, and stops. "Guess I better get goin' huh?" "Yes." That was a rhetorical question, but thanks for agreeing with me. "Wish me luck!" I grab my messenger bag with my phone, pocketwatch, sketchbook and plenty of pens inside and dash out the door.

Now if only I knew where the heck I was...
