Having heard enough, I weave my way towards the back of the dining hall where Mom is standing, frozen, deathly pale, and terrified. Well, I can't blame her, really. It is, after all, the first time she's seen him since he abandoned us.
Zeus follows after me, much to my surprise and anger. Who does he think he is? Does he really think after all he's done--and not done--to my mom and I that just a flowery speech and a promise of power is enough for me to put it all behind me?
Interlocking Mom's fingers with mine, I squeeze her hand in a way I hope she finds reassuring.
"Kry--," Zeus begins, but falters and stiffens, surprised, when he spots my mother. "Kaitlyn..." Much to my amusement, he appears to be quite uncomfortable with this unexpected encounter. Good. He clears his throat awkwardly. "Hello. It has certainly been a while..."
For a moment, she looks so angry that I'm sure she's going to reach out and slap him. Amazingly, considering she's just found out that the man who abandoned her is in fact a god, she is able to restrain herself. She rips her hand from mine, balling them into fists. "I ought to just--" She cuts herself off, forcing herself to calm down before saying something she might regret. She pinches the bridge of her nose, her eyes misting over with long overdue tears.
"You...I don't even...There are no words for this."
Zeus lets out a long breath. "You thought I was insane, Kaitlyn."
"Do not play dumb with me!" Mom shouts angrily. "You know that's not what happened!"
"Kaitlyn, I would have stayed if I could have. You know that."
"No," I break in tersely, pointing to the others at my table--Thalia, Jason, and Nicole. "No, I really don't think you would have.
"So this is how it works, huh?" I begin, my voice trembling with anger. Mom wasn't the first, obviously. Thalia and Jason...they're not her kids. You went from their mother, to mine, to Nicole's mother with less than a year in between. Just like that. As though they were toys that you could just pick up and drop in the trash when things got too complicated."
"I made a law, Krystal!" He says, sounding a bit agitated. He turns to Mom. "Yes I could have saved her. I could have saved Nicole as well. But the law was made for a--"
"Yes, you made a law!" I cut him off, unable to hold myself together any longer. "Which you broke. And left my mom and I, none the wiser." My expression darkens, and my voice raises until the entire dining hall can hear. "And do you know what makes me the angriest? What hurts the most? That you and your sick little gang of cohorts do this all the damned time. You hurt people just like you hurt my mom and I." The tears start to fall. "And I don't care if you're a god or a microbe, because what you are doesn't justify what you do. It doesn't make it any more right. You think that because you have power you can do whatever you want. Maybe you can. But it most definitely won't make people respect you any more."
I take a step back, knowing that I will be most likely be punished for voicing this. But I can't back off now. I've spent my entire life preparing for this moment. I force my voice to sound strong and fearless. "I don't care if you kill me or throw me in whatever prison you use to satisfy your ridiculous pride. Do it if you want, and I won't care, because I am speaking on behalf of every woman and every kid that any of you," I gesture towards Poseidon and Hades as well, "have ever broken."
