Child of Athena

XIV

Sophie was stuck. She had only read about the Runespoor. All three heads had different jobs. The left was the planner, the middle was the dreamer, and the right was the one they had to look out for. It was critical, and the right’s fangs were poisonous.
“Blake, grab your gun.” Denise directed. She was already heading for the Runespoor, her silver knife gripped tightly.
Sophie groped for her dagger, and found it in her bag. “Just stab it!” She called to Denise, who was closer to the monster. The poor mortal bus driver’s eyes were nearly popping out of his head. Sophie realized that Denise was holding her silver knife. Silver wasn’t enough to banish every monster to Tartarus. She about to call out to her, but Blake was first.
“Denise! Move out of the way!” He quickly yelled out. Sophie was confused. What was Blake talking about? Denise luckily understood, and ducked. Blake shot his gun, and it hit the right head. But, the Runespoor didn’t vaporize like the usual monster. Sophie nearly face palmed herself. Of course, she had forgotten. The left and middle head in a Runespoor usually banded together and bit off the right head eventually.
Killing off the right head just helped them avoid the venom fangs. At least that was progress. Sophie charged forward, targeting the body. Though, Blake and Denise were confused about the monster not disappearing. Fortunately, the mortal bus driver had realized he should scramble.
“Aim for the body!” She called to Denise and Blake. The Runespoor was the only one to respond, with a nasty hiss. Sophie soon heard a gunshot, as she quickly crouched down. Soon snow wasn’t the only thing falling. Golden dust from the monster slowly drifted in the wind.
“What was that? I’ve never seen anything like it.” Blake quickly hid his gun as mortals came out of the McDonald’s.
“Excuse me? Thank you.” The mortal bus driver came up to them, still shaking and sweating.
Blake grinned. “No problem, sir. We always run into mon-” Sophie elbowed him before he revealed they were demigods.
The man chuckled. “No need to hide your identities. I’ve met Aphrodite before. I was father to a demigod.”
Sophie peered at him. “Who?” Though, she spotted Denise out of the corner of her eye, violently shaking her head.
The man choked. “Silena. I doubt you knew her.” Sophie’s stomach churned. Silena Beauregard, the daughter of Aphrodite. She had been killed in the battle of Manhattan. But Silena had mentioned he owned a chocolate factory. What was he doing driving a bus?
“I thought you owned a chocolate factory.” Blake mentioned. Of course, he probably was there when she was killed, since he was a child of Ares.
“I did.” Mr. Beauregard closed off the subject. “I’m sorry, but I can’t drive you any further. We can’t have monsters being attracted to my bus.”
“But, Mr. Beauregard,” Sophie protested. “We payed for tickets. We’re on a quest.”
The man just shook his head. “I don’t doubt that you are, but my daughter was killed by a monster. I can’t have innocent people share the same fate. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to find another way to travel.”
Blake glared daggers at the man. “Listen, we’ve already gone far enough. We just need to get to California, and you’re just bitter that Silena’s gone. I was there, and she wanted nothing but to be with Beckendorf, where she is now. She’s still happy, and you probably hate us because you hate monsters. Well, we’ve had more than our fair share of those beasts, and you need to let go and give us a ride!” He was nearly yelling, but Mr. Beauregard’s face was emotionless.
“I’m sorry. I can’t give you a ride. And if you were there when she was attacked, why did no one save her?” He stormed off.
“IT WAS HER CHOICE!” Blake shouted at him, his fist shaking. In a few moments, the bus had started, and all the passengers, except three young demigods, had boarded.
Pretty soon, Blake, Denise, and Sophie were left shivering on the side of the road.

Notes

Today, the most hilarious thing happened. My friends and I were working on the script for our talent show (since we are the MCs) and one of my friends (who's a total hunger games fangirl) wrote in the script that she only read fanfictions, and added #teampeeta. So obviously, I had to add my part, and write #teamleo. We went back and forth, but it was vetoed from the script :(.
Anyways, have a good weekend!
