The Hope in Our Scars
Chapter One
In front of me lay a complicated row of mirrors. All of them about my height and about a few feet wider than me. I stare into the crystal glass that reflected my physical appearance. I slowly ran my fingers through my hair, the other hundred clones around me copied my exact moves. I felt a wave of uncomfortable tension between me and the clones. As I tried to find my way out the maze of reflecting doom, I felt a warm hand grasp my shoulders, and I was jolted awake from my horrible nightmare...
Where am I? How did I get here?
I open my eyes slowly. The dark peaceful sky above surrounded me like a warm blanket of hospitality. I knew from the fact of the tropical climate, it was summer. That didn't prevent me from having a chill that shook my body head to toe.
I still realized the two strong hands that held me, and supported me. I slowly, feeling a bit terrified turned around, and took a breath of release to see, my dream-savior was a teenage boy about my age. He was latino, short, scrawny, curly dark brown hair, and a cute smile that almost melted my heart. My heart was beating kilometers per minute. I couldn't help but run a finger through the curly hair, which caused my hand to get stuck. I was horrified after I noticed what I was doing.
First day, and now he thinks I'm a inexperienced with love teen freak.
To my surprise and my relief, the latino boy chuckled softly, and gently untangled my fingers from his hair.
While blushing madly, I stammered, "s-sorry."
The boy just laughed again, making my cheeks feel like the bright boiling sun.
"Sorry, where are my manners?" the boy said, and held out his hand to me.
I eagerly took it as a friendly approach.
"I'm Leo Valdez," he introduced himself, while bowing in front of me like a gentleman. "I guess we're both stranded on this terribly air conditionerless island."
He said this like it was a funny joke we both shared. I agreed. This joke was funny, even though the thought of it was just plain cruelty.
"I'm Lilac Grace," I managed to find my voice, but it just came out in an unusual high pitch. "Nice to be in your acquaintance."
Leo laughed again. I felt like digging myself into the sand, and letting the sea consume me. It was better than being teased by a hot, funny boy who I just met.
With the realization of my discomfort, Leo switched to a more serious expression. "I guess we'll both stay together until we get some help, huh?" he asked, like he was actually waiting for my response.
Taken aback, I nodded. "Mind as well get some air conditioner and fridge while we're at it," I joked.
Leo laughed once more. A charming chortle that made my body feel like a melting chocolate under the sun.
"Your really funny," he said in a matter of fact tone. "I really think we'd get along."
I blushed once more and was utterly shocked as I felt Leo grasp my hand and pull me up.
"Let's create camp, and camp out for the night."
Even though I had a bajillion questions about where I was or how I even got here, fatigue got the better of me, and all I recalled was finding a camp, and falling asleep in Leo Valdez's arms. Was this what feeling in love felt like? I didn't know about him, but I was going to love and savor the next few days of isolation.
