When the Sea meets the Sun

Chapter Six

Echo eyed the unfamiliar house, wrapping her arms around herself as she sunk down on the floor by Eliza, who had thrown herself on the sofa.

"I don't know how long we can stay here without it eventually finding us." She said, absentmindedly fingering her loose black curls.

Eliza sighed, looking out the window to the night. "I don't want to put Seth in danger either. For now, though, we can relax."

Echo snorted. "We can never relax."

Eliza shifted, sliding off the couch cushion onto the floor next to Echo. She put her head into her hands, her hair slipping over her shoulders.

Echo stretched her legs out, her combat boots rubbing against the carpeting and leaving a brown smear on the floor. "Crap."

Seth walked in, noting the stain. He spent half a second too long eyeballing the brown scar on his white carpeting that he tripped over the leg of an end table and ended up in Eliza's lap. "Sorry," He muttered, gently pushing himself off her.

Eliza had her hands up in the air, looking rather startled. "It's...um...fine."

Echo let out a short laugh, standing up to her full height and shoving her slender hands into the back pockets of her black skinny jeans. "Aren't you two cute."

"No, no." Seth waved his hand. "That was my fault, sorry."

"Actually," Echo swiveled around on her toe, grinding more dirt into the carpet and walking off it onto the linoleum, "It was mine."

Eliza opened her mouth to speak when something slammed into the glass window, glass exploding all over the living room floor. Echo yanked out a dagger from her boot, scraping her black nail polish slightly.

The night was dead silent, the occasional owl breaking the quiet. Echo tensed, slamming her hand into the light switch and the house went black.
