The Original Character Court

Beau (Bo) Finnegan

Foreword:
My Lit professor is boring as hell so I might as well do something interesting. Good thing I'm seated at the very back and we're allowed to use laptops for notes. Ah, college life.
And today, I am joined by my amazing girlfriend. Laurel say hi.
Okay nevermind, she gave me a look.
We'll probably end up having a conversation here since we're trying not to talk out loud. Sorry, if it bothers you.

Basics
Name: Beau (Bo) Finnegan
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Birthday: 13 Feb 1999 (he's almost sixteen)
Ethnicity: White American
Hair color: Blonde
Eye color: Brown
Other physical descriptions: Lots of scars, scabs and fresh cuts on his skin, especially around his arms, chest and thighs, as well as a patchy spots on his head with little hair due to compulsively picking his skin and pulling at his hair.
[Any chance we can take this kid and have Xan look at him? - L]
[Babe, this is an OC. He doesn't exist.]
[ :( - L]
His skin was never that great to begin with, and the scratching has only made it worse. His "itch" as he calls it gets worse when he's nervous, stressed or unhappy. The mania stems from his perceived and internalized imperfection, as well as a way to calm himself when he starts to feel any panic in his chest.
[People actually do this, right?]
[Yep! - L]
He is very close to underweight for his age because he has a very limited appetite and doesn't like trying new food.
Height: 5'6" (hasn't hit his growth spurt yet)
Weight: 130 lbs
[According to my chart, this ratio is pretty healthy. It's not really borderline underweight.]
Sexual orientation: Heterosexual
Godly parent: Hecate
[Another under-used goddess. Nice one.]
[Hecate is so fab! - L]
Mortal parent: Patrick Finnegan
[I like that name. - L]
[Patrick?]
[Yeah.]
[Eh. I guess it's okay.]
Other relationships:
Max Finnegan: Max is Bo's much bigger and older half-brother. He's nineteen, but still a senior in high school,
[Damn he's dumb.]
[K! Just because you're smarter than a lot of people doesn't mean you get to say those kinds of things! - L]
[Sorry, not sorry, love.]
outweighs Bo by damn near fifty pounds and plays football.
[Oh great. A knucklehead]
Bo looks up to him because he is so "normal:" there is nothing wrong with him, and he has never had to be accommodated for.
[Aw no! Bb! Normal's overrated. :( - L]
[I can't even with you L.]
Max often makes sure that Bo doesn't look like a complete and total weirdo at school, and often stops Bo from picking at his skin or hair. Max is also, deep down, protective of Bo, but he disguises all of that by constantly pushing Bo down.
[No! Don't do that! Siblings are supposed to care for each other! Don't hide your feelings! - L]
[Oookay. Well, you were able to show that Max cares for Bo (the picking at his hair portion). But why does want to disguise how much he cares for his brother?]
He calls him "freak," he tells him that he'll never get a date, never be as popular as he is, and that he is ugly. Bo cannot argue against him, seeing as he believes all of Max's serpentine remarks to be true.

Patrick Finnegan: Patrick is Bo's father, and he knows that Bo is a son of Hecate, and that Max is just a mortal. He never tells Bo this, but puts higher expectations on him because of his mother being a goddess. He is bitter that Hecate left him, an event which made him feel invalid as a man. That invalidity quickly turned to anger, and Patrick starts to mentally blame Bo for Hecate leaving him. This promptly turns into snide remarks (like father, like son), which make Bo feel even more worthless.
[Asswipe.]
[K! Language!]
[Eh.]

Sarah Maple: Sarah is a classmate at the boarding school Bo and Max go to, and like Bo, she has a skin problem. Her skin, oddly, is very faintly mottled with brown and green spots, making her look like she put camouflage paint on herself and it won;t come out (trust me, I will explain).
[We look forward to it.]
Sarah becomes Bo's friend, one of few, and is the only person to make Bo realize how many good things he has going for him. She is like a sister to Bo, someone who can calm the panic that always seems to be welling up in his chest.
[We need people like that in our lives.]
[I love you too. - L]
[I didn't even say that.]
[You didn't need to. :) ]
Bo goes to Sarah when he feels upset, and there is not a day where they are not at each other's side. Sarah often fights with Max about Bo, which he doesn't like because Max ends up taking it out on Bo. But in the end, she is one of the only people Bo trusts that doesn't secretly abuse him.
[I like this friendship! You go girl - L!]

Personality
Positive traits: Bo is the prototypical "little brother" figure. He is sweet, loyal, kind, polite and smart. On the inside, he desperately wants to be confident and outgoing, and he sometimes has little bursts of being happy about how he looks, or how he feels, and those days are the days he remembers.
[That's so cute! - L]
[Ofc you'd find it cute.]
He loves singing, the only thing he knows without a doubt that he is good at, and this might have to do with his parentage (Hecate). He later discovers that he can impart magic into his voice, a quality which helps him gain more confidence in the future. Bo is also very good at convincing himself of things, which is a technique he uses to instill confidence within himself on his "good days."
[This wasn't really a personality trait but I'll let it slide since you did put an important personality factor.]
Negative traits: However, it is so easy to squash whatever positivity that Bo starts to feel.
[optimism. Not positivity.]
Due to his fears surrounding his image, his thoughts that he looks ugly, and his tendency to over-analyze the smallest things and blow them out of proportion, which leads to Bo dwelling on every comment, look or gesture that has even the slightest hint of negativity towards him.
[Everything matches up.]
[Yay! - L]
[Seriously? You pushed my hands off the keyboard just to type 'yay'?]
[Your comments sound so broody! I'm just adding more life~]
Bo is also so easily manipulated by those around him that he doesn't even know they are controlling him. His positive trait of singing is also often smothered due to Bo's quiet and defensive nature, coupled with his fear of someone telling him that he isn't good at singing.
Fears/Phobias:
He is extremely claustrophobic, due to his diminutive stature and feeling like all of his imperfections shut him into a box.
[Short people unite! See, K? This is why I'm claustrophobic.]
[To the submitter, well-explained. The phobia has a good and sensible reason. To L, do you really want me to talk about how tiny you are?]
[You're only an inch taller than me!]
[Still taller. Babe, please stop pouting.]
He doesn't need that box to be squeezed by a lot of other people standing close to him.

He also fears his own imperfection, due to a traumatic experience he had with his father, who, after coming home with Bo after his yearly checkup and discovering that he was very underweight for his age, forced him to eat until Bo throws up.
[That's terrible! - L]
From that point on Bo develops a dislike, almost a hatred, for everything that was not "normal" about him: his weight, his skin, how he dresses, how scared and "weak" he looks and his B-average grades which never seem to be good enough.
[bb let me love you!]
[Hey!]
[K, of course I love you but this character needs the love more.]
[Oh is that how you want to play, babe?]
[Awwww, Kara! You're so cute when you're jealous!]
[I'm not jealous! This character doesn't exist! I can't be jealous of a fictional character! And come on. Let's keep reviewing.]

The last thing that he maybe doesn't fear, but definitely dislikes, is physical contact. This has to do with both Bo not wanting people to touch the scabs, as well as his fear of punishment, which he received plenty of from Patrick in his childhood.
[That's understandable and realistic.]
[Kara, over here, was afraid of touching people for a while.]
[Oh stop.]
[Love you :) ]
[Unfortunately, I love you too.]
Fatal Flaw: Bo is too trusting,
[This doesn't really match the disliking physical contact. Given how his father treats him, I'd think that he would have trust issues.]
and lets others get him down too easily because he takes every comment about him very seriously. Like I said, he is loyal to those around him, even if they treat him poorly and are not loyal to Bo. He never harbors any anger at either his brother or his father, even though they abuse him. His brother obviously controls him, even though it is under the guise of being the protective older brother figure.
[Okay, this really is kind of iffy. His flaw would probably be "too reliant on approval" based on his experiences. Not really trust but more on approval. Love, what do you think? You're better with feelings than I am.]
[Yeah, I agree with Kara. If anything like that happened to me, I'd have difficulty trusting others but I'd still want some sort of validation from them. Just because you want to live up to other people's expectations, it doesn't mean that you have to trust them. Does that makes sense?]
[Couldn't have said it better.]

Combat-related questions
Camp: Half-Blood
[Ha! Another Greek!]
[Oh come on! The Romans are better!]
[Wanna bet?]
[Looking forward to it.]
Weapon of choice: Bo is generally a pacifist, as well as being afraid of combat because he thinks he'll be easily overpowered due to his internalized feelings of weakness. However, when he does start training, he likes using a small, Celestial Bronze dagger.
[Where'd he get it? Just curious. You don't really have to explain.]
He also likes being stealthy, seeing as camouflage allows him to not have an image to worry about; camouflage allows him to not be able to be seen. This, coupled with Hecate's power over the Mist, allows him to be very good in the art of not being seen in combat.
[Silent killer. Nice.]
[Like a ninja!]
[Really? Ninjas are overrated.]
[Fine then. An assassin!]
[That's my girl]
Other weapons:
Powers and Abilities: Bo's main power is imparting magic into his voice.
[Makes sense given his parentage. Just wondering, why singing?]
When he sings, he can do things that normally he wouldn't be able to such as:
--Heal people
[This is so useful! - L]
--Distort the Mist (although not nearly as powerfully as Hazel)
[Good job nerfing this]
--Create walls of energy (though this saps considerable strength) that can serve as a forcefield around him and someone close to him in a fight. These forcefields, however, are quite hard to facilitate in real life because they require complete concentration on the words and the notes, and in battle, that level of concentration is near impossible.
[Again, good job at nerfing. Powers sound okay. Not too overpowered. Just right.]

Backstory: Bo grew up with his brother and father, and until his 5th grade check-up at the doctors office, everything seemed to be goodie completely fine.
[goodie completely fine?]
[I think he means "going completely fine"]
[Ooooooh~]
But after he was discovered to be in the 12th percentile in weight, his father seemed to become annoyed. Bo had always been a picky eater, but now it was starting to affect his health. His father drove him home quickly, obviously angry but not talking to Bo, making him feel nervous, like he'd done something wrong. When they got home, Patrick furiously starts making the biggest sandwich Bo has ever seen. It has foods in it that Bo hates, but his father forces him to start eating. Bo starts crying, feeling like he is being punished for being thin, just like the boys he sees on TV. He eventually eats the sandwich but throws it all up due to being so nervous and panicky. His father then kicks him, screaming at him for throwing up all the weight he was about to gain. Bo ends up crying in the bathroom for a long time.
[That's horrible!]
[This sickens me.]

After that experience, Bo starts to hate little details about himself. He starts scratching his skin, justifying it by convincing himself that he has eczema and can't help it. He starts pulling out his hair, convincing himself that it feels good. But during this time he also meets Sarah, who notices him by seeing the scabs on his forearms. She realizes that he can sing, and starts encouraging Bo to hum or whistle more when he gets down, and not to constantly vent his stress by scratching or pulling.
['Atta girl]
[I like this girl! I ship them!]

Eventually, he makes it to Camp Half-Blood from a boarding school outside New York City where he and Max go to, on the advice of Sarah, who says that she loves the camp. So, Max, thinking that he can ditch Bo for the summer without Patrick noticing (or maybe ditch him forever and run back to Patrick), drives Bo to Camp Half-Blood. Max tries to walk Bo up to the top of Half-Blood Hill, and they find Sarah waiting for them, which they think weird. Sarah calls for Bo to come to her, seeing as she will be at the summer camp that year, but when Bo starts to run towards Sarah, Max smells something fishy, especially because all he sees through the Mist are some strawberry fields. He thinks Sarah is trying to get Bo away from him, to steal him away from Max's overbearing influence on Bo. But, after he can't cross Thalia's Pine Tree (due to his status as a pure mortal) ((I think that's the rule, right?)),
[Actually, it's kind of debatable. A pizza delivery guy ended up in CHB but I don't know what he saw.]
[You know, for simplicity's sake, we should probably keep it like that? IDK, K. Just a suggestion.]
[Well, it does makes things easier.]
Sarah grabs Bo and runs with him towards the Big House. After meeting with Chiron, Bo's demigod status is revealed as well as the fact that Sarah is actually a dryad, Bo's protector.(Note: Maple is Sarah's actually name, seeing as she inhabits a Maple tree, but Bo always calls her Sarah).
[Can dryad's be protectors? So far, I've only read about satyrs being protectors. Babe?]
[Ditto! And I don't think dryad's can stray too far from their... life source?]
[Yeah, their life source, a.k.a. their trees. Maybe, you can make her a cloud nymph instead and make her a "volunteer" or something because the Camp was running low on Satyrs after the Gigantomachy or the Titan War.]
Bo takes her protector status the wrong way, getting angry at her because he thinks she never really was his friend, she was just doing her job. He also gets angry at her because her "skin problem" was something she was born with, while Bo's is an addiction that he can't quit.
[That's actually kind of painful. For Bo, I mean. His reaction's realistic too.]

After his first day, however, things start to improve. He becomes more confident, starts working on putting magic into his voice after being claimed by Hecate, and he starts to feel a bit more happy. He "coincidentally" gets put in a lot of the same activity slots as Sarah and starts training with her. He discovers the forcefield power with her, screaming when a clumsy camper doing construction on top of the Nike Cabin almost drops a huge cement block on Sarah. He screams, and a purple-ish smoky looking wall deflects the block. He didn't even realize he could do that, and realizes that a little bit of musical pitch must have snuck into his voice when he screamed. After that, Sarah and he make up, after hating each other after Bo's first day. Bo starts having romantic feelings for Sarah, but fears she will reject him due to the fact that or her, he was just another demigod she had to get to camp. At the present moment, Bo is in the middle of his second full year at Camp Half-Blood, debating whether or not he could face his father and brother ever again.

Comments:
I like this OC! He was cute - L
Laurel, you find a lot of things cute.
Like you!
I'm not cute. I'm bad-ass.
Awwww. So cute.
Ugh. Anyway. The OC had an interesting set of powers. The only iffy part about his personality was the fatal flaw but I've given you my comments there. Besides that, this OCs good to go. Nice one. :)

Final judgement: Elysium
Congratulations! - L
