The Librarian
Puddles and Secrets
Leo and I sloshed through the rain, following a vague muddy track leading up to the shack where I suppose my brother was meant to be waiting.
"Gods," Leo muttered, "Why does everything have to be wet?"
I couldn't help but agree, I wore only a thin jacket over my black dress and cold fingers of damp were working their way through the thin layers.
We passed under the thicket of trees and the steady rain turned into occasional droplets. After what seemed like forever we finally reached the tiny cabin. I pounded my fist hard against the wood. "Jacob!" I yelled over the drum of rain against the treetops.
The door opened to a face, hidden under a hood. "Come in, Kimmi." A British voice said.
I walked into the scant shelter of the leaking roof and hugged my arms for warmth, Leo came in beside me, still muttering curses to the rain.
"What is it, Jacob? Are you going to answer my questions now?" I asked, more than a little ticked off.
"Not with him here." He jerked a gloved hand at Leo.
I gave the Hispanic boy a pleading look. "Can you-?"
"Yeah, yeah." He groaned. "I'll be in the car." And with that he trudged out into what had become a heavy storm.
I turned back to Jacob, ready for some answers. But before I could get them, he threw back his hood, red eyes met my gaze.
"You're not my brother!" I whispered, my eyes widening at the horrid face that had before been hidden in shadows.
"No." The demonic creature snarled. "I'm not." And it leaped for me, claws extending from its now-torn gloves.
I yelped and leaped aside, towards the door. But not before it slashed my arm and jacket with its talons. I ran for the car, sprinting through the mud to where Leo was waiting for me to finish talking with my 'brother'. I heard footsteps gaining on me and I ran harder and harder.
Something caught on my jacket and I tried to get loose, but the footsteps were gaining closer and closer. "Leo!" I cried, desperate for help, but nothing came through the blackness.
"Nothing can save you now!" The horrible voice yelled from behind me, pushing me forward to where I lay sprawled in the mud.
I began to lose hope, but suddenly the night lit up red and the creature cried out in pain.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that!" Leo cried, and the night lit up again.
My arms shook as I pushed myself up from the mud with my bleeding arms, and I looked up to see Leo shooting fireballs from his glowing hands that repeatedly hit the monster in the chest. He fired again and suddenly the creature exploded into golden ashes.
Leo knelt down beside me. "Are you okay?" He asked, assisting me to my feet.
I just had time to shake my head before the world spun into black oblivion.
