The Librarian

Paralyzed

Leo rolled out his door and came up with hands blazing while I struggled clumsily from the restraints of my seatbelt to follow after. I came clear of the wreckage to find Leo already firing ball after ball of blazing fire at the dark silhouette of the hellhound. But the dog seemed to almost absord the heat and light into its thick coat. Calypso was chanting to herself beside the wreck, light growing from her cupped hands as I just... stood there.

I looked around for something to use as a weapon, sick and tired of being useless all the time. I picked up a large branch I could use as a club and joined Leo in facing the hellhound.

"You're too weak Kimmi. Stay with Cally." Leo told me, pulling me back by the shoulder with one hand as he fired ball after ball of white flames at the dog.

"I can help." I snapped back, throwing his hand at him. "And I'm not weak."

Leo sighed and another bolt of fire left his fingers. "If you get yourself killed then it will be on me. Nico will kill me if he finds out."

"Well he's not here right now." I replied, anger sparking in me at the reminder of Nico's absence.

The hellhound padded towards us and I raised up my club.

"Leave this to me, Kimmi." Leo warned but I hefted my club anyway.

"No way. This slobber machine is going to pay."

"Calypso!" Leo called.

"On it!" She called back and the next second I couldn't move my limbs, locked in place by her spell.

I couldn't move but I could glare and oh if only glares were daggers then I would never be left undefended.

I watched Leo as the hellhound slowly weakened and eventually collapsed into a strangly beautiful black powder. He kicked at the ashes tenderly and bent down to collect something from the monster dust.

"What is it?" Calypso asked, jogging past me and ignoring my paralysed body. I shot her an particularly deadly glare.

"A note." He said, reading it then turning to me. "It's addressed to you." He said, holding out the note.

I shot him a pointed glare and his eyes widened.

"Oh right." He turned to Calypso. "Cally?"

She murmured a few words and I could move again, I plucked the note from Leo's hand and unfolded it.

'Kimmi,
I know where he is. If you want to find him then meet me at the bottom of the Empire State Building noon tomorrow and I'll explain everything. Even the bits you don't want to hear.
-M'

"What does it say?" Cally asked and I handed it to her. When she'd finished reading she looked to me, eyes wide. "You're not actually going to go, are you."

I shook my head. "Of course not." I lied and she breathed a sigh of relief.

But of course I was going to meet the sender. I needed answers and this person had them.

Whoever it was.
