Child of Athena

I

A blinding white light snakes through a tunnel. It heads towards a small figure, that doesn’t seem to notice. The figure acts like it’s facing the light, head on. The light rushes past, engulfing the figure, and the figure crumbles to dust.
An eye blinks rapidly, the flesh surrounding it weathered and covered in splotchy boils. The iris turns a deep blood red and a single red tear emerges from the eye.
A woman’s voice echoes as if it is in a large cavern. The voice bounces and rings.
“A prophecy is nothing more than advice,
The answer to this is not a choice,
Heed your heart, but follow your mind,
Those who mean well are just your kind.”

Sophie awoke with a cold sweat all over her body. Peering around, she noticed she had fallen asleep in the midst of studying, again. Undoing the curtain surrounding her bed(which she had invented herself so that others wouldn’t mind if she read all night with a flashlight.), she realized it was still the middle of the night.
Grabbing her writing journal, she jotted down what she had seen in her dream, but this was something she would most likely keep to herself. Sophie swung her legs to the side of the bottom bunk and slipped on a pair of running shoes.
To her left, Malcolm snored softly. Sophie softly plodded over to a window, to glance up at the waning moon. A silhouette caught her eye. It stood quietly in front of the large bonfire. but it’s head was cocked up, looking at the stars.
Sophie quietly crept out, avoiding every floorboard that creaked. This wasn’t the first time she had snuck out at night. Quickly opening the door(it was less likely someone would hear her if the sound was fast), she stepped out into the brisk night air.
As she got closer to the silhouette, she recognized his features. “Nico?” She whispered loudly enough for him to hear.
Just as she registered pulling out her Celestial Bronze dagger, Stygian Iron was pressed against her neck. “Nico…” She choked out, her eyes filling with terror. “It’s Sophie.”
The sword was immediately pulled away and Sophie could breath again. “Sorry, you scared me. Wait, who are you again?” The son of Hades’ dark eyes surveyed Sophie and she wished she had put on a sweatshirt over her ratty old t-shirt that read, this is not a pipe, with a picture of a pipe.
Of course, no one knew who she was. Figures. “I’m Sophie, Malcolm’s little sister.” Nico’s shoulders eased and he sighed in relief.
“What are you doing up right now?” Nico looked up at the stars again, then down at her. He was only a couple inches taller, but Sophie knew they were the same age.
“I could say the same thing about you.” Her laugh sounded like a crisp bell, ringing in the air several seconds after she had stopped.
“I came out here to think.” His eyes met Sophie’s and they filled with interest. “How come I’ve never seen you before?”
Sophie’s eyes filled with sadness and she quickly looked away. “I don’t know.” She left him all alone in the middle of the formation of cabins, making him wonder if he had actually seen her or not.
That night Sophie fell asleep sobbing.

Notes
