Child of Athena

II

She awoke to a new day. Next to her, Cassidy, one of her half-sisters, was rushing to straighten her pile of books. “Gods, Cass. Relax.”
“Sorry.” She smirked and finished making her bed. “But Aphrodite’s cabin is doing inspection today.” Aphrodite’s cabin always had to make sure everything was perfect, which is hard considering the cabins’ occupants are teens and kids.
Sophie hurriedly tidied up her space and headed to the bathroom to get changed. They had a system. Since there were an even amount of girls and boys, and only one bathroom, in the morning the girls got to go first, and in the evening boys got to got first. It was a simple plan that avoided conflict.
“Alright,” Piper Mclean, head of Aphrodite cabin, grinned and surveyed the room. “Let’s find any mess.”
Sophie shifted her weight and glanced out the window as her stomach growled. When was breakfast?
Piper’s eyes glazed over the cabin, and fixated on a whiteboard. “I’ll give you an eight.” She scribbled down the review on the clipboard.
“What?” Annabeth demanded answers. Oh, no. “It’s at least a nine. We even cleaned up under the bunks.”
Piper chuckled. “You forgot to erase the board.”
Everyone saw that someone had drawn two stick figures, a girl and a boy. They were labeled Piper and Jason. A heart surrounded them.
Annabeth’s face flushed. “Percy. I’ll get you Seaweed Brain!” She stormed off towards her boyfriend’s cabin. Piper strolled off, no doubt, to Apollo’s cabin.
Sophie walked up to the board, and studied the drawing. She knew Piper was dating Jason Grace, Thalia’s younger Roman brother. Of course, she didn’t know them personally.
“Let’s go to breakfast.” Cassidy suggested. Everyone agreed, and they headed out the door.
At Athena's table, nearly everyone had their nose stuck in a book or talking animatedly about war plans for their next Capture the Flag.
Sophie picked at her food, regretting that bringing "Anne of Green Gables," had slipped her mind. Across the pavilion, a set of dark obsidian eyes centered on her, and she felt as if someone was boring into her soul.
Looking up, she spotted the son of Hades, sitting at his table, but he was looking over. At her.
Sighing, she stood up, leaving her food. Malcolm paused from his conversation with Annabeth to glance quizzically at her. "I'm not hungry. See you in the cabin." She lied as smoothly as a child of Hermes.
Scuttling off, she peered over her shoulder to see if her overprotective brother was still watching. Instead of heading towards the cabins, she cunningly slipped past her brother and Chiron's gaze, and plopped down next to Nico di Angelo.
"Why were you staring at me?" Sophie demanded. She had chosen to confront him, and didn't think any other way. Too bad she couldn't defy her shy personality all the time.
"Excuse me?" Nico stuttered, "what? I was not." He denied it.
"Then what were you looking at?" Sophie persisted, tracing her finger in a circle on the wooden table.
"Nothing. I was just wondering if...never mind." He shook his head, as if having a disagreement with himself.
"Wondering if I actually existed." Yes, she was putting words into his mouth, but she was mildly annoyed.
Nico gaped in shock. "No. I..." He hesitated. "I was wondering about...um..." Nico was not the smoothest liar.
"Gotta go." Sophie hurriedly murmured as she noticed her half sister, Annabeth, heading towards Nico's table.
She slunk back to their cabin in an awful mood.
