Child of Athena

III

"Hey." Cassidy casually greeted her when the rest of her cabin came back. Sophie was sitting on her bed, trying to avoid anyone who would distract her from her project.
"Hey to you too." She shot back, grinning playfully.
"What are you working on right now?" Cassidy peered at her supplies. "I think Mom will love it being in here though."
"Let me finish before I explain." And with that regretfully blatant remark, Cassidy was sitting at the table, struggling with the rest of her siblings to understand Latin.
Picking up her pen and drawing her design really got everything off her mind. Why was Nico staring at her? What did her dream mean? Would Malcolm let her do archery? Everything was ignored, except for the task at hand.
“Sophie.” Her head shot up when she heard a voice. “Where in Hades were you in sword and shield practice?” It was Hugo, one of her half brothers, the one who was about the same age as her.
“Malcolm doesn’t want me going to that, and I skipped because I’m working on a project.” Her brothers were too overprotective, and since her and Malcolm also shared the same father, he held on to her.
“C’mon, you don’t want to miss archery, then. Chiron’s teaching today.” Sophie huffed but capped her pen.
“Fine, hold on, I’ll be there in five minutes.” She gave in and carefully covered her project with her bedsheet on her bed. Heading to the bathroom, she gave Hugo a wide grin.
After she was done there, her and Hugo headed towards the field where Chiron had always set up archery lessons. Sophie personally preferred to use a dagger, but since Chiron felt it was necessary, she had no choice.
The fresh air cleared her mind, letting her think. Hugo strolled next to her in silence, knowing she liked the quiet.
The grass crunched under her feet, and she glanced in the direction of the archery ranges. A blonde figure was shooting an arrow at a makeshift target.
“Will.” Hugo called out as they grew closer. “Where’s Chiron?”
Will Solace released another arrow, and it hit the center of the wooden target. When he turned to face us, his face was a mask of happiness, but Sophie could tell something was off with the son of Apollo. “Didn’t you hear? They’ve discovered a new prophecy in the Syllabine Book. Chiron’s at the Big House, talking with Rachel.”
Sophie was well aware that the children of Apollo at Camp Jupiter, Ella the harpy, and Rachel Dare, the Oracle, were all trying to decipher the scraps and bits of the Syllabine Book. A new prophecy was a tremendous breakthrough.
Sophie thought about her dream the night before. “A prophecy is nothing more than advice.”
Was this what her dream was talking about? The voice that had spoke that in her dream seemed vaguely familiar, like an old blanket she had owned as a baby.
She was deep in thought when Hugo yanked her back to reality. “Let’s go back to the cabin.”
As if in a trance, Sophie stiffly nodded her head and followed her half brother back to their silver and blue cabin.
“Hi, Soph’,” Malcolm ruffled her hair in their cabin as he worked on his Latin prefixes at a table. “Didn’t you have to go to archery?”
Sophie smirked, having the satisfaction of missing out on her least favorite activity. “No, Chiron’s too busy. They discovered a prophecy.”
“What?” Malcolm exclaimed, leaping out of his seat. “When?”
“Um…” Sophie fidgeted nervously. Her brother’s grey eyes were becoming even stormier than usual. “I don’t know.”
Malcolm sighed and ran his fingers through his blonde hair. “Oh gods, Annabeth just left to visit New Rome. Thanks for the info, Sophie. Stick around Hugo. Gotta go.” He strolled past her and headed for the door.
Sophie assumed he was leaving for the Big House. Malcolm was always so proactive, taking charge when Annabeth had a quest, making sure everyone was accounted for, over protecting her.
She exhaled loudly and flopped onto her bottom bunk, reaching for her latch hook project. She needed to concentrate, and she prayed to Athena that her own mother would accept the gift.
Remembering words her half brother once uttered, she mentally repeated it to herself, praying to the gods. “There is no great invention, from fire to flying, which has not hailed as an insult to some god.”
Her life was a cage, and the only way to escape was the gods themselves.

Notes

Yeah, I just found that quote from a book about Daedalus, since they technically are half siblings. Hope you enjoyed this chapter.
