Sophie and Denise eventually fell asleep, but Blake stayed up to keep Carl company. “So... “ Blake paused, trying to fill the empty silence. “How did you survive into adulthood?”
Carl shrugged. “Luck. And my mom’s one of the minor goddesses.”
Blake scoffed, his shoulders slumping. “Lucky.”
“I know.” Carl smirked.
“That’s not what I meant.” He demanded. “I mean, my dad puts a buttload of pressure on his kids. His best friend is death, and I’m always in between the emotions of being happy to see him and being scared of him.”
Carl sighed, his shoulders slumped. "Listen kid, if you and Ares had a fight, I think you should bury the battle axe. I can tell you resent him."
Blake shrugged. “Listen, this is just a conversation, not a therapy session with Dr. Phil.”
Carl glared at him, his smile turning into a grimace. “You don’t know what I am cable of. You better keep your mouth shut.”
“Oh, I’m so scared.” Blake faked terror. “A son of Tyche threatening me.”
Carl pulled over to the side of the road, and leaned back. He gripped the collar of Blake’s jacket and twisted it. Blake could hardly breathe. “If only you knew my true identity.” His breath was sour in Blake’s face. He struggled free and gasped for air.
“Who…” Blake stuttered, “who are you really?”
Carl smirked. “I tell people I’m a son of Tyche so they won’t be scared. Why do you think I’m actually going to California.” Blake shrugged as a response. “To meet my father, of course.”
Blake was confused. “Who’s your father? Hades?”
Carl laugh was short and dry. “Of course not. I would’ve been long dead. No. I am the son of true death, Thanatos, your father's best friend. And if you dare tell the two girls, I’ll arrange for you to meet my father personally.”
