Child of Athena

IX

The blonde grey eyed girl looked stunned, but Denise just couldn’t help but smirk. Sometimes it felt good to know more than others.
Blake interrupted the silence. “So, Sophie, do you want to tell Denise anything?”
Sophie just nodded, still shellshocked. She visibly gulped and forced a grin. “Denise, Blake, I think I’m going to need your help in deciphering the new prophecy.”
Denise nodded, but she was confused. What exactly was a prophecy?
“Alright.” Blake hesitantly agreed. “Could you tell us it?”
Sophie nodded. “Sure. Come with me to my cabin.” She led the two of them to a blue and silver cabin, which Denise recognized as the place next to the weapons shed, where she got her Stygian Iron knife. She swung the door open and peered around. “Come on in.” She invited them.
Blake and Denise strolled in, and Denise took in the cabin. There were several SMART boards that she usually imagined in a classroom, and desks were filled with more blonde haired, grey eyed teens were hunched over studying. All the bunk beds were pushed up against a wall, as if sleeping was unimportant.
"This is my cabin. Okay, here's the prophecy." Sophie lifted up a piece of paper and read from it. Denise listened attentively, trying to get all the information she could. "Sun will take its rightful seat." Sophie finished off. Blake was the first one to speak.
"Dragon probably means Ares, and owl Athena." Blake mentioned, but Denise had no idea what he meant. Sophie grinned.
"Yeah, that's what I thought, and spirit could mean Melinoe." Denise's eyes widened. So that's why Sophie needed her help.
“We should tell Chiron.” Denise suggested.
“Obviously.” Sophie muttered to herself. Denise tried to ignore her, taking the high road.
Blake led them out and they strolled towards the Big House. Denise took in the camp. It was so different from Camp Jupiter. The Romans were so strict and orderly. Here, kids lounged by the lake, laughing at jokes. Denise loved everything being more easy going, but that didn’t mean that the Greeks didn’t train hard.
Sophie stared straight ahead, her expression more determined. Denise felt as if Sophie was different from the other Greeks. Her facial features were even a bit different than the other children of Athena, and she only looked like Malcolm.
“Chiron.” Blake violently banged on the door, and the centaur opened the door, leading them in.
“Sophie, do you have any ideas about the prophecy?” Chiron’s steely brown eyes centered on the girl.
Sophie nodded. “Dragon could mean Ares, Athena, owl, spirit, Melinoe.”
Chiron grinned, and surveyed them all. “This seems about right. Blake, Denise, Sophie, you three will leave for New Rome tomorrow morning.”
Denise was puzzled. “Why?”
“To tell the praetors that you three are leaving for a quest.”
No one spoke for a full minute. “Quest?” Denise stammered. From what she had learned from Blake, some campers never made it back alive.
Chiron nodded, his face full of regret. “Yes. Apollo has not communicated with anyone outside of Olympus for the past four months. It’s time we do something.”
Sophie stood up. “Well, it’s settled. We leave tomorrow morning at ten.”
