The Other Stories

The Gloves

I walk the trimmed path along the family garden and think about my glove ceremony. I have alot to live up to. My brother went to Blackwood and he's now under the employment of the royal government. He earns $30 an hour and I daresay that my own family doesn't make so much.
In 6 days, I will be given my glove. This is a much bigger occasion then you might think. We light fireworks and dance under the stars until midnight. I demonstrate my new power in front of the whole visiting family.
I stare at a purple rose blooming in the middle of a circle of rocks. I reach out and brush the soft petals.
My mother calls me for lunch. The dew from the rose falls to the ground and I stand up, turning and walking to the table.
I am now in my room, contemplating my unborn power and what it might be.
Will I have telekinesis, like cousin Danny? Will I have control over metal, like mother?
Will I be invincible?
Will I be able to harness the elements?
Will I? Will I? Will I?...
The thoughts spin in my head as I fall gently asleep on the windowsill.
Hours later,I wake to a pecking on the window. I see a large blue bird tapping the glass.
I lean my tired forehead against the pane and stare at it. It's a beautiful creature, it's blue wings were specked with gold. I can see an intelligence in its eyes.
It waves it's leg forward. A rolled paper is taped to it.
I smile and lift the window. The bird flutters in and settles on my nightstand. The paper drops to the ground.
I pick it up and unfurl it.

Dear sis,

Hope you're doing well. I hear that your ceremony is drawing near. I hope to be there, but the Royals are pushing me to the limit.
Please give Martin some crumbs.

Love you, Jamie.

I glance up at the blue bird, Martin. It somehow suits him and I take some bread crust from my pocket.
Martin chippers eagerly and I throw it in the air. He snaps it up.
I fold the letter and slip it in my drawer.
Martin flys out the window. I quietly shut the window. It's dark outside and I fall into bed. I sleep instantly.
Six days until my ceremony. And my 14th birthday.
