The Other Stories

Fezs and Bow Ties

One day, a blue box landed on a planet.
Now, the inhabitants of that planet weren't very curious. You can hardly blame them for seeing a tall blue box materialize out of thin air and walking the other way.
It stood there for decades. People took note of it and moved on.
Until one day, it happened to be open. A little boy, not very curious, mind you, wandered into it and got locked in. People almost didn't notice he was gone. But they did.
And the little boy? He decided to make the most of his time aboard the mysterious blue box.
Pretty soon he went exploring.
He found that it was much bigger than it seemed. This stuck in the young boy's mind, and he was very impressionable. He thought this proof of magic, or didn't think, at least, but he could feel, in his heart, that it was magic. Or so he thought. He was very young, and wasn't capable of complete sentences, much less conscious thought.
So he went around, and explored.
Outside the blue box, people started to forget about that little boy.

Years Later

A girl walked through the blue fog. Fog was spewing, from the cracks in the ground, or maybe not. It might have been from the sky, which was a very pinkish-blue shade. The red sun sunk below the horizon.
The girl wandered down the empty street. She was crying.
"Mommy! Daddy!"
A black hooded figure stood at the end of the street.
The girl saw it and screamed.
Maybe she knew what it was.

A young man sat upright, almost displacing the blue-eyed cat laying at his feet. It meowed.
"Yeah, yeah," But he petted the cat on his head and it purred.
He stood up, inside the bronze-plated room, and stretched. His mouth opened wide, and a faint golden light could be seen at the back of his throat.
He closed his mouth and opened the door, stepping into the hallway, which glowed brightly. The cat jumped out and twirled around his legs.
He entered the main room. It had a blue column in the center, with an all-around control panel.
Perfectly normal, except for the man leaning against the control panel.
He stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the man. He stood up and looked at him, taking the red hat from his head and bowing. "Hello!"
He looked down. The cat, too, was acting very strange, but in a different way. It jumped into the man's arms and purred, much louder than usual.
The man chuckled and placed the red hat, which he later found out was called a fez, on top of the cat's head. It shook it off almost immediately.
The man turned his attention to the young man, still standing in the doorway, mouth open, eyes wide.
The man clucked. "That's no way to look at your landlord."
The young man unfroze. "Excuse me? I live here."
"Because I let you, all these years." The man straightened a bow around his neck.
He walked to the door and opened it. "Glorious New York," He called back. "The 20s. Ziegfeld girls. It was an age of prosperity!"
He walked out the door. The young man ran after him.
