It's A Jungle Out There
Great Things
I awoke to the sound of rain pitter-pattering down upon us, and it drippity-dripping into our house.
"Leila?"
"Hmm-mmm?" I replied, rubbing sleep out of my eyes.
"The rain is kinda....."
"I noticed."
"No need to be in a cruddy mood. It's not like we have a tiny chance of ever getting back to civilization. Oh, wait..."
"Shut up."
I got up and walked out of the shelter I had built. Apparently when you don't pay much attention to what you're doing, your buildings only last about a week or so.
"Jessie, pack up anything we need in the hammocks and hurry up!"
An hour later we had made good time towards the creek.
"I can sense it!"
"Gods bless the children of Poseidon."
"Aww, thanks."
"We're here!"
We hauled the raft I had absentmindedly put together on our way here on the bank. It was a large slab of bark, curved so I had only needed add walls on either end, which were made of more bark. I had used tree sap to stick them together, and was quite pleased with my work.
I looked into the water.
"A foot deep, about six feet for us."
"Thank you, O Daughter of Poseidon, for your great watery wisdom."
"Wisdom is Athena's thing."
"C'mon. We can do this."
"Are you ok?"
I had just been hit with another flash of memory, from when I was little, and my mother had me on her lap as we watched something about white water rafting.
"These people are doing great things, but you don't need to do great things to be a great person." she had whispered to me.
"Hey Jessie?"
"Yeah?"
"Would this count as a 'great thing'?"
"Hell yeah!"
"Then yeah, I'm good."
"Don't you mean great?"
"Shut up."
Notes
This chapter is dedicated to the late Daisy, the first dog I ever had, as it's her birthday today. I love you, girl.
