Embers

We followed the ringing of gun shots down the fence. Well more I sprinted towards them and the others followed me, my dad carrying Kat. We reached a courtyard facing an alley and for a terrible moment I could see only a bloody corpse on the ground and I couldn't see whose it was. As we got closer I realised that it was the mangled body of an asian man and I breathed a sigh of relief, a pang of guilt attacking me in penance for the relief I felt.

The gun shots died down and panic racked through me, we followed the peppered holes bullets had made in the ground and nearby buildings. A troop of guards passed us, heading back to the prison: they had called off the search which either meant they had given up finding him or Allen was already... I broke into a sprint again.

"Allen!" I called as we followed the alley. "Allen!"

A pained grunt came from a tiny shack that might have been, "here!"

I ran into the hut and nearly screamed, Allen was propped against the wall with blood gushing from his side, Jack pushed past me and pulled some crushed ambrosia from his pocket. He handed it to Allen and examined the wound, he winced. "This is nasty. Dove, do you have any nectar left, I need to clean the wound."

I blinked and fished the flask from my pocket. "I'm not sure how much is left." I crouched beside Allen and took his hand. "You're an idiot." I told him.

Jack cleaned the wound and Allen winced. "Since when did you become a medical expert?" He growled.

"I'm training to be a nurse at the hospital, now shut up and hold still." Jack snapped.

Allen barked a laugh. "A nurse..."
