The Other Stories

Antihero Academy(Chapter One)

Jaki's POV

$7,000. It took us three days to count it. The money we stole from a firm that was stealing charity money. We brought the champagne and clinked glasses.
Then came the knock at the door. We exchanged glances, and he flung the money into the bag and pushed it under the piece of floor that came up. A little pocket to hide stuff.
I put on the block shoes and the purple shawl, stooping over. I looked old. That was the point.
I threw dust on everything and flipped the chair covers. Now they had faint flower patterns.
The knock came again. I turned the pictures around to show black and white photos that I had gotten from a calender factory.
I turned and hobbled to the door. I opened it and a man stepped in. The man had a red beard and deep blue eyes. He carried a cane, but stood strong, upright. He was perhaps six feet tall. Just enough to be intimidating to a five foot tall person, such as myself.
He looked around and then talked to me. "Is your granddaughter here, ma'am?"
My spine sparked. He was talking about me. He thought I was my grandma. My disguise worked. That meant somebody was looking for me. "No, sir, she just went to the grocer." I said in an old, slightly hoarse voice.
He frowned. "Well, call me when she comes back." He paused before stepping out the door. "She been given a scholarship to our college. I'd like to speak to her very much."
Something about the man's tone scared me. Goosebumps down my arms, and the man gave a slight smile before leaving.
I checked to see he was out of earshot before throwing off the shawl. "Come out, James!"
He emerged from the kitchen. "What did he want?"
"He's looking for me. We have to pack." James' eyebrows shot up, but he started stacking the money into rubber band bundles. I took the pictures, the shawl, my clothes, and my emergency kit. James finished the money, put it all in a large zip-lock plastic bag, and pushed it to the bottom of his backpack. He packed all his things. In half an hour, we were ready.
We left the chairs, the furniture, the appliances, and everything else. We didn't need them. Then We went to the old, dusty car parked in front. James hot-wired it and we threw our bags under out seats. James started the car and pulled out of the drive-way, turning and going down the road.
We got about a hundred miles away, before I remembered what I left behind. "James!" I grabbed his arm. He swerved and nearly crashed into a car before parallel parking across the street. Horns blared. He frowned. "What?"
I looked at him. "I forgot it." He jumped. "Seriously?!"
He drove down the bridge and turned around at the end. We sped back to the house, and I cursed when I saw a police car pull into the thin traffic behind us, lights flashing.
