The Other Stories

Countdown

Three hours

Sitting in the pick up truck with my friend wasn't how I hoped to meet my soulmate. My clock would've run out already, but the time ticked down on my wrist. Amelia kept telling me we were almost there, just a few minutes. We were going to a party, one her soulmate was throwing. She met hers at twelve, the youngest ever recorded was three years old.

Two hours

I kept faking drinking. Personally, I wasn't one for alcohol. Plus, I didn't want to break the law. Fifteen isn't close to twenty one. There was a guy talking to me, saying his clock almost timed out. His face lit up when it beeped, shaggy blond hair and pale skin, blue eyes. His soulmate had green hair and a deep mohagany skin tone. Her eyes were a deep hazel. Beautiful. My clock clicked down to an hour.

One hour

The amount of people inside made my anxiety rise, so I squeezed my way outside. The cherrywood patio was empty except for a few couples. Now I was alone, surrounded by beautiful twinkling lights. I took a drink from my cup, which I manag to get pure Sprite into. The chirping of crickets was a cliche, but only made my nerves worse. My brain began running through the people I didn't meet at the party, which one of them it could be. Then I remembered my mom wanted me home by eleven. It seemed weird, her letting me be out later. Then again, she knew today was the day. The day I met my soulmate.
Soulmate sounds to posh when you really say it. In the simplicity of the night sky and starts, the word 'soulmate' sounds pretentious. My wrist beeped when someone sighed next to me. Obviously she was surprised as well, turning to me.

"Wow, this is awkward. I would've worn something else if I remembered that my clock would tick down today.." She blushed.

"You looked great, honestly." I smiled at her a little. She smiled back gratefully. I took the moment to study her features. An average nose, slightly rounded. Her skin was more on the ivory side, freckles dotting her cheeks. She must've dyed her hair, normally it wouldn't be such a bright red. Cut close on one side of her head, flopping I've rot the other, almost in her eyes. Deep brown eyes. She was about an inch taller than me, making her laugh lightly.

"Guess I don't get to stand on tiptoes to kiss you." She nudged me. Her red flannel shirt was warm, and black jeans made her blend with the shadows. "I'm Katrina." She smiled at me

"Nice to me you, love. I'm Mariah."

Notes

Friend showed me a screenshot of a post like this, so I thought about writing my own.

Surprise you you with the end? No? Cool.
