Writing Reviews and Rants

The Gist of It

WHAT KINDS OF STORIES DO I REVIEW/CRITIQUE?
I'll take requests for anything up toPG-13(or R if it's R for violence only). I'll review/critique just about anything from any genre. I generally don't like horror or tragedy, but I will review/critique it. I will just likely be more strict towards it.

WHAT ARE MY REVIEWS/CRITIQUES FOCUSED ON?
I do best reviewing plot, believability, character development, dialogue, grammar (I am a Grammar Nazi, let me warn you), and...well, I can try with just about anything. Whatever you want me to focus on, just put it with your comment and I will focus on it.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO GET TO YOUR STORY?
"Contrary to popular belief, I do have a life." If your story is long, it could easily take me a very long time to review it. If it is short, it will take a lot less time, and will likely be done before the longer reviews. I have very intensive school work and am also trying to write some things of my own, so again, I don't know how long it will take. My habit of ranting and going in-depth will also be likely to extend the time, but hopefully that will be worth it come time for posting the review. I do promise you, however, that I WILL get to it.

HOW HARSH ARE MY REVIEWS/CRITIQUES?
I am pretty nit-picky when I review. I strongly believe in honesty, and not dressing up the truth, but I will NEVER EVER SEVER (yes I made that up) be mean. If your story sounds like it was written by a five-year-old, then I will tell you so. If it sounds like it was written by Riordan, I will tell you so. I won't be mean and make fun of you, but I will tell you what I think about it. I will always make sure to be as encouraging as possible, and give tips for improvement, even if my review is riddled with criticisms. Try to go into reading my reviews with an open mind and receive the gist of it, without being offended by the actual criticisms. That is how you will best get something out of my reviews.
As for critiques, you yourself can choose exactly how harsh you want me to be. The formula is described below.
You can request both a review and a critique, or just one of them. A request for both will have the two done separately, but put into the same chapter.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REVIEW AND A CRITIQUE?
A review is where I determine whether it is a good read or not based upon a point system. Very similar to the things other review books do. A critique, however, is where I tell you not only whether I think it's good or not, but ALSO exactly how to fix any mistakes. It is a more in-depth review that will not generalize your mistakes but will point out each individual one (specificity is your choice.)

If you say "review", I will assume you mean review. You must specifically say "critique" if you want a critique, as well as giving me the required information.

REQUIRED INFO

-Reviews
If you want a review, just give me the name and ask what it is you want me to focus on. If you just want an overall review, simply tell me it is a review you want, and I will review it!

-Critiques
NOTE: If there is something that really, really sticks out to me, good or bad, I will disregard the depth and harshness to point it out. The depth and harshness are really only there for me to go to if I can't decide between being detailed and summarizing.

On a scale between 1 and 3, how in-depth do you want me to be with my critique?:
1 Longer Summary (See Chapter 2)
2 In-Depth (See Chapter 4)
3 Nit-Picky (Automatically Gets A Free Line-Edit)

On a scale between 1 and 3, how harsh do you want me to be with my critique?:
1 Mostly Good Things
2 Mostly Bad Things
3 Absolute Honesty (Both Good and Bad)

IF YOUDON'TGIVE ME ANY OF THE ABOVE INFO:
The default review for me is a depth of 2 and harshness of 2 or 3.

SO. An exemplary review and critique request would look something like:

"Can you review and critique Crystalline Melodies for me? I'd like the critique to have a thoroughness of 2 and a harshness of 3, and the review to have an emphasis on dialogue and character development. Thanks!"

Can you please review my story "The Will of The Gods" with a depth of 3 and a harshness of 3? It is yet to be completed so please tack that into account. Thank you!

It really depends on how they present it. If it's anobviously intentional clone, then no, I don't approve of it. That's lazy. I say make your own character with as few outside influences as possible. If it turns out to be similar to something else, that's alright: there's no way you can create a 100% original character. You can always tweak it a bit later to make it different, and your writing style should be different enough that the characters aren't ridiculously comparable.
no I haven't read Fangirl.

wikipedia says it's true; some newspapers from 2012 back it up; nothing recent, but there's a link to her original name "snowqueens icedragon" and her fanfic. good enough for me. she got her twilight fan fiction published.
well, there's harry styles fan fiction that also got published. I kind of want to know how you feel about that. Isn't that kind of plagiarism? To just change the names but steal the characters? Have you ever read Fangirl? They talk about this sort of plagiarism a little bit.

Yeah, I think I heard that somewhere. It's pretty dang pathetic.
